It depends on which license was ordered; a Single Activation Code license or a Dual Activation Code license. Note that all licenses purchased prior to May 01, 2008 are by default Dual Activation Code licenses.
If you purchased a Single Activation Code license then you can have only ONE Activation Code issued and outstanding on your records here at Dirigo Software at any one time.
If you purchased a Dual Activation Code license you may also have a single computer activated with our software and keep the second code unused for possible future use. If instead you desire two computers be activated at the same time AND if you have exclusive use of those two computers then you may be eligible to have two Activation Codes issued and outstanding on your records here at Dirigo Software at any one time (meaning 2 computers activated under the same license). Note that this second code on this one license is not for sharing a program with someone else in any way at any time - that is a felony. Please read on for more very important information!
For the record, a single copy of our software is a single license for a single person to use. This entitles you to one activation code in use at any one point in time. If you have EXCLUSIVE use of two computer systems then we may legally activate the program on both computers. Note that we are not obligated to activate both systems, only that it won’t be illegal to do so.
You must understand that if someone else can POSSIBLY use our software on one computer while you are using it on another computer then legally we will only be able to activate EITHER computer and NOT both (because it would be POSSIBLE for two different users to run the same copy of the same program at the same time on two different computers, thereby severely violating US Copyright law and subjecting both users to federal fines of up to $250,000 plus 5 years in jail for each illegal use, plus up to $150,000 in awards in civil suits brought by Dirigo Software).
This means:
- Can I put the other code on my buddy's computer? Only if you both want to go to jail for 5 years, pay Uncle Sam up to $250,000, and pay Dirigo Software up to $150,000 we'll win in a civil law suit - which is a whole lot more than your buddy just buying his own license.
Can I put the two codes on two computers in the same office with more than 1 Reconist? No, because it would be possible for two different people to run the same copy of the same program at the same time, which is illegal (as mentioned, above).
What if I have 7 investigators in my office, each with their own computers? Then you need 7 licenses of the software you want them to use. Not just ours, but Windows and every other software title they will need to use in the performance of their jobs.
What if I have 3 investigators in my office, all on different shifts, and we all 3 use the same computer in the office? Then you need 1 license of the software and would use just one activation code to activate the program(s) for all 3 to use on their shift.
Can I put the program on my office computer and the laptop in my car? If NO ONE ELSE can use either computer while you are using the other computer, yes. If any other person can use one computer while you are using the other, then no.
Also, in response to some confusion, Activation Codes are CONTROLLED ITEMS. What we keep track of is the number of activation codes issued against each license. It makes no difference if you only have one computer with an activated program on it because other computers were replaced or otherwise disposed of. We only track the issued codes. If you cannot deactivate a program from a computer then that corresponding code can never been used on a different computer.
